From the clubs inception in 1969 to present day, Westshore RFC has had 3 crests or logo’s, with a new one to start the next era with a merging or move. Below is a brief history on each of these crests.
The original crest was used from 1969 to 1988, when the club was known as Velox RFC. The crest itself was created by our 1st President and founding member Jim Hume. The motto which hasn’t changed to this day, and was created by Jackie Clarkson, is Velox Omnia Vincit which when translated from latin means Speed Conquers All. Read about how the club started in 1968 from the founding president, Jim Hume:
With the old clubs location on Gordon Head Road, a small walk to UVICs Wallace Field, there was an increasing number of graduating UVIC players looking for a new team. Some of these great players that came over were John Lyall, Mark Wyatt, Mike Holmes and Tony Arthurs to name a few. As UVICs was known as the Vikings at that time, It was decided at that time to adopt the nickname Valhallians, as Valhalla was where Vikings went to die. As such, the club adopted a new name Velox Valhallians RFC. This crest was designed by Tony Arthurs, who not only played for Velox for many years from 1988-1993., but also coached the forwards from 2003-2006, and again from 2013-2015. Read about how the club merged back on that day in 1988 by 1st hand account from Ex-President Barry Wheelhouse:
History of Velox Valhallians RFC
During the summer of 2015, Velox Valhallians had to find a new home and were welcomed in by West Shore Parks & Rec in Colwood. Alongside the move, a new name and crest were chosen for the club. The club’s new name is reflective of the new area we call home and will be known as Westshore RFC. The new crest incorporates all of the storied history of the clubs past, with the Black “V” in front; representing the original Velox team As well as the blue “V”representing the Valhallians and the contributions UVIC Vikings have made to this club. Both come together to make a “W” for the Westshore communities which will be our new home for years to come. The crest was created in conjunction with graphic designer Jenny Marshall from Eclipse Creates Inc. (sponsored by Rob Parker from Parker Johnston Roofing): with former player Jay Jimmo (1999-2021) and former head coach Winston Stanley (2003-2006,2013-2015) arriving at the final crest design.
